Bubba Watson earns first win in Travelers playoff

Cromwell, CT (Sports Network) - Bubba Watson two-putted for par on the second playoff hole Sunday to earn his first PGA Tour title at the Travelers Championship.

Watson survived a double-bogey on the 17th hole of regulation to get into the playoff. He birdied No. 18 to post four-under 66 and join Scott Verplank and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin at 14-under-par 266.

"For me to get into a playoff after shooting four-under was unreal, and to somehow make that par putt to win was unreal," said Watson, who earned $1.08 million for the win.

Verplank carded a bogey-free 64, while Pavin matched Watson's 66 to get into the extra session at TPC River Highlands.

The three returned to the 18th for the first playoff hole. All three found the fairway off the tee, but Pavin was more than 100 yards behind Watson. Pavin's second found a greenside bunker.

Verplank hit a solid approach within eight feet before Watson nearly ended things. His wedge shot rolled just by the edge of the cup, narrowly missing a hole-out eagle for the win.

Pavin blasted from the sand to within four feet, then stepped aside. Verplank drained his birdie effort. Pavin told Watson to tap his birdie in. Watson did that to eliminate Pavin and move the playoff to the par-three 16th.

"The playoff was a little disappointing to me," Pavin said. "I kind of popped up a three-wood there and left myself in a pretty precarious spot."

Verplank missed the green left in a chipping area before Watson pulled his tee shot some 45 feet right of the hole. Watson rolled his birdie try to three feet before Verplank tried to putt from off the green.

His birdie effort took two bad bounces and stopped seven feet from the hole. Verplank missed the par-saving putt, then watched Watson tap in for his long- awaited first PGA Tour victory.

Chris Riley closed with a five-under 65 to miss the playoff by one stroke at minus-13.

Third-round leader Justin Rose faltered to a five-over 75 to share ninth place at 11-under-par 269.

Verplank, who teed off in the ninth-to-last group, had birdied on two and six to turn in 10-under. He soared to 14-under with a long eagle putt on the par- five 13th and a hole-out eagle on the short par-four 15th.

"It's really a great tournament golf course, particularly starting with the 13th hole, lots of things can happen, and some big swings and big changes," stated Verplank. "At least on two of the holes, I was on the right end of that deal."

Pavin was next in. He headed to the back nine at minus-12 after birdies on three and six. He posted his third birdie on the 12th, but gave that stroke back with a bogey on the 14th.

He bounced back with a birdie on 15 and another at the 17th to join Verplank at 14-under.

Watson played one group behind Pavin and seemed in control late in the round. He headed to the back nine at minus-12 after birdies on the third and sixth.

After stumbling to a bogey on the 11th, Watson birdied the next two holes to get to 13-under. He joined Verplank in the lead with a seven-foot birdie putt on the 15th. Watson grabbed the lead with a nine-foot birdie effort on 16.

However, Watson ran into trouble at the 17th. He found a fairway bunker off the tee, then dropped his second shot into the water. That led to a double- bogey, which left him one behind.

Watson recovered one of those lost strokes with a six-foot birdie putt at the last to get into the extra session.

Padraig Harrington fired a six-under 64 to share fifth place at 12-under-par 268. He was joined there by Chad Campbell (66), Retief Goosen (67) and Ricky Barnes (68).

Rose had three bogeys through 12 holes, but he made his only bogey of the day on the 13th. He trailed Watson by one at that point, and his troubles weren't done. He found water off the tee at the 15th en route to a double-bogey. Rose also bogeyed the 16th.

"It's hard to play golf when you feel like you're going to miss every putt from two feet. You know what I mean? I was just that uncomfortable on the greens all day," admitted Rose, who won his last start at The Memorial.

Rose shared ninth at minus-11 with Vaughn Taylor (70), Brendon de Jonge (69) and Kris Blanks (67).

NOTES: Kenny Perry, the 2009 champion, made the cut, but ended in a tie for 74th at plus-three...The playoff was Watson's first, while Pavin falls to 5-4 in extra sessions and Verplank dropped to 2-4...The PGA Tour heads to Aronimink Golf Club outside Philadelphia next week for the AT&T National, where Tiger Woods is slated to defend his title.
