General News Russell lands 1st European Senior Tour win |
Hexham, England (Sports Network) - England's David J. Russell captured his first European Senior Tour win Sunday despite closing with a three-over 75 in the final round of the PGA Seniors Championship.
Russell finished at five-under 283 for a two-shot win that was anything but comfortable.
He fell one shot behind after losing six strokes in a sloppy three-hole span around the turn. The stretch included a triple-bogey at the eighth, a double- bogey at the ninth and a bogey at the 10th.
But Russell rebounded with back-to-back birdies on the next two holes and survived a bogey at the 15th to earn the victory.
Fellow Englishman Barry Lane closed with a 69 to share second place with Paraguay's Angel Franco (71) and South Africa's Chris Williams (73) at three- under 285.
Scotland's Gordon Brand, Jr. (71) finished two strokes further back at 287.
