Report: Gruden close to taking over at Miami

Fort Lauderdale, FL (Sports Network) - The University of Miami is reportedly on the verge of naming Jon Gruden the program's next head football coach.

According to the Sun-Sentinel which quoted Canesport.com, barring any unforseen circumstances, Gruden will be tabbed as the replacement for Randy Shannon, with a formal announcement that could come as early as Wednesday.

Gruden and Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt were reportedly working out the final details of the contract on Tuesday night.

Shannon was fired following a 23-20 defeat to South Florida on Saturday in the Hurricanes season finale. The former 'Canes linebacker went 28-22 in his four years at the helm of his alma mater.

The 47-year-old Gruden spent 11 years as an NFL head coach with Oakland and Tampa Bay and compiled a 95-81 record regular season record and a 5-4 mark in the post-season, which included a Super Bowl championship in his first year with the Buccaneers in 2002.

He has been out of coaching since getting fired at the end of a 9-7 season for Tampa Bay in 2008.

Gruden was a graduate assistant at Tennessee for two years before becoming the passing game coordinator at Southeast Missouri State in 1988. He was the wide receivers coach at the University of the Pacific in 1989 and held the same position two years later at Pitt. He spent three years with Green Bay, then three as offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The paper also indicated that Gruden most likely will name his brother Jay as offensive coordinator.
