Andretti, Petty partner with Andretti Autosport for Indy

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Andretti Autosport will team up with NASCAR legend Richard Petty and field a fifth entry with John Andretti behind the wheel for the May 30 Indianapolis 500, the team announced Wednesday.

Andretti, who is a cousin of team owner Michael Andretti, also will compete in the May 1 IZOD IndyCar Series race at Kansas. He will drive the No.43 "Petty Blue" and "Day-Glo Red" paint-schemed car with Window World Inc. supporting the team's efforts in both races.

"It would be difficult to script a scenario any better than the one we have here," John Andretti said. "I can't wait to get in the car and get to work. May can't get here soon enough."

Last year, Andretti drove the No.43 Window World car to a 19th-place finish in the Indy 500. Petty formed a partnership with the Indianapolis-based team Dreyer & Reinbold Racing to field the car for Andretti.

Petty, a seven-time champion and record-holder of 200 race wins, will serve as team co-owner for his second-straight Indianapolis 500.

"There is so much history around this event, and the Andrettis have such a rich tradition in racing," Petty said. "I'm looking forward to watching John hit the track in May."

Andretti Autosport currently is a four-car operation with drivers Danica Patrick, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay, a newcomer to the team. Andretti has two Indy 500 victories -- Dan Wheldon (2005) and Dario Franchitti (2007).

"I'm really excited to be able to be a part of this," said Michael Andretti, who previously raced against his cousin John in CART. "I have a lot of respect for John's talent and always have. I really think he will fit in very well at Andretti Autosport and can be a factor during the month of May."

John Andretti has competed in one NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race so far in 2010, with a 38th-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500.
